RUNNING
I have been a recreational runner for a while. A couple of years ago, I started to race every once in a while so I always have a goal. My not-so-fast-but-getting-faster racing is limited to distances greater than 10K. Here are some races I completed and other web sites on running.
Running related web sites:
Runner's World Magazine: Online version of the famous magazine.
- Marathon guide.com: A gread place to find a race, in the U.S. and international. You can also find results of a competitor from this web site.
- Hal Higdon's homepage. I followed his training plan for the Victoria marathon on October 7, 200, and Boston marathon in 2002.
- Active.com: This site lets you register to various races. You cannot, however, register through this web site when you decide to run a race two days before the race, as I often do. This site is not limited to running but includes all kinds of sports.
Some completed races:
- Mt. Rushmore Marathon. 1999. A small race. Michelle's first marathon!
- The Rige Run, 2000. An infamous race in Bozeman. It starts at Fairy Lake and finishes at "M." About 21 miles and total elevation gain of 7,000 ft and loss of 10,000 ft. A great race. The race is in mid August.
- Jim Bridger's Trail Run (1999, 2000, 2003). A fun 10 miler. Starts at Sypes Canyon trail head and come back to the same place. It's held in mid June.
- Portland (OR) marathon: Supposed to be the best marathon in the north
america. It was a great race but the course was not very scenic. I ran it in October, 2000. I mistakenly assumed the Boston qualifying time was 3:15. I finished in 3:12:24. I later learned the Boston qualifying time was 3:10... I finished 199th overall (58th in my division).
- Royal Victoria marathon in Vancouver, B.C.: I ran the race on 7 October 2001. Great course! Despite my bonking around mile 18, I finished 90th overall (87th out of 1,436 male runners) in 3:06:24. I made it to the Boston marathon!! For this race, I used Hal Higdon's Advanced I training schedule.
- Boston Marathon in Boston: I ran the race on 15 April 2002. There were more than 14,000 runners! It was an incredible experience. I managed to break the 3-hr wall, finished 787th overall (747th among all male runners) with 2:55:44 (chip time). For this race, I used Hal Higdon's Advanced II training schedule.
- Headwaters Relay. 2002. A crazy relay in MT. A three-day 264 mile team running relay from Three Forks, MT to the headwaters of Missouri River. Our six-person team (Michelle, Blake, George, John, Chad, and me) actually won the inaugural race.
- Big Sky State Games: I ran half-marathons in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Nothing special to mention. I had fun running these races.
- Jim Bridger's Trail Run (6/22/2002). A 50K race. This was my first ultra-marathon attempt. It started at Sypes Canyon trail head, went up 3000 ft, came back to Middle Cottonwood trailhead (down 3,000 ft), went up to Saddle Pass (up >3,000 ft), came down to Truman Gulch trail head (down 3,000 ft), and back traces the trail. I was winning until the half way point, then lost the steam. I finished two minutes behind the winner.
- Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado Springs, CO (8/18/2002). It was a tough race; going up 7,000 ft from 7,000 ft and coming back the same distance. I did well and finished 18th over all and won the age class!
- Beartooth 8 miler (6/22/2003). A race that just goes up 8 miles from the start to the finish line, approximately 2000 ft of elevation gain. 15th place!
Some potential future races:
- San Diego Marathon in January 2004
- Boston Marathon in April 2004
